Acting the Song for Teens

Acting The Song for Teens is a Musical Theatre Repertoire Course designed to help the singer/actor develop character and clear acting choices with a song. Our focus will be on developing a greater connection to the music & lyrics as a means to an authentic & original performance. The class is designed to be a collaborative artistic community, because we believe the artistic dialogue amongst your peers & honing of observation and critique skills are as essential to the mastery of stage craft as getting on your feet and performing.

Each class will have an hour of overlap from 6:30pm-7:30pm where teens will have the opportunity to observe and learn from watching adults at the professional level in the same classroom.

• 5 Sessions of audition prep/performance workshops
• 2 Private 45 minute vocal coachings
• 1 Cabaret performance

Every teen student will have a total of 5 working sessions in which to receive coaching from the instructors & TAs. Each class will begin with technique building & a group vocal warm-up with Andrew, before students share the solo work they’ve prepared. As each singer/actor presents their work for 15-20 minutes, students will have the opportunity to offer their up observations and ideas during feedback facilitated by the instructors. When a student is not performing in class, they have the opportunity really maximize their participation by being active observers, taking notes, and articulating their perspectives. In addition to 5 class sessions, each student will set 2 individual 45 min. vocal coaching appointments with Andrew to focus on learning the new material for class and their next steps in technique.

Upon ending the 5 sessions, student & adult performers will be invited to appear in a cabaret event, featuring one or two of the songs they’ve worked on in class.

Application / Audition:
Acceptance Priority in the order we receive applications.

Teen Actors will be accepted into the course by completing an online registration/application and providing a video sample of their work as their “audition”. If you have existing YouTube video or other video file of yourself in solo performance or as an audition, simply send the link in an email along with your completed application as an attachment. If you do not have existing video of yourself in performance, you may use a cell phone or camera to film yourself singing a 60 second cut of a song of your choice.
