Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this quilting class:

Learn different techniques of fabric folding to create your own unique version of a Pine Burr Quilt. We will explore the use of various shapes to create different types of layouts and patterns. Students will come away with the knowledge of how to create this time honored style of quilt, which can be applied to everything from quilts to pillows to wall hangings.

Level: Intermediate. Must know how to use a sewing machine and sew a 1/4" seam.

BERNINA sewing machines, neutral thread, irons, and design walls will be provided for use in the classroom.

Required supplies to bring with you: (all supplies available for purchase at Gotham Quilts)
  • Rotary cutter
  • Small cutting mat
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Mechanical pencil and eraser
  • Acrylic ruler at least 12-18" long
  • Washabel glue sticks (at least 2)
  • Pen for marking fabric
  • 20 (or more!) colors of solid or printed fabrics. Bring enough color choices to suit your creative style. Pick colors you love with a variety of light, medium, and dark options. PLEASE SEE FABIC PREP INSTRUCTIONS BELOW
  • 30"x30" pre-basted quilt sandwich -- use white or light colored fabric for front of sandwich, your choice of color for the back. You may bring a larger quilt sandwich if you like, but this is a good size to learn with.
  • Colored pencils (optional, if you'd like to work out design options before starting to sew)
FABRIC PREP:
Please choose whether you would like to work with triangle shapes or rectangle shapes. Each shape creates an intrinsic layout.

If you look at the 2 quilt examples, you will see that the triangles make a more horizontal diamon shape (Pineburr Quilt) and the rectangles make a more vertical diamon (Bazzar Quilt). Whichever shape you decide to go with, prep a minimum of 10-30 of each color in your palette. I would suggest you come with a minimum of 200-300 pre-folded shapes to start with, but feel free to make more! This may sound like a lot, but they get used pretty quickly once you start the quilt (see below for how many pieces to make a square foot of quilt).

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING TRIANGLES
One 4" by width-of-fabric (WOF) strip will give you approximately 10 folded triangels.
1. Cut a strip of fabric 4" by WOF
2. Sub cut strip into 4" squares
3. Fold each square in half tip to tip and press
4. Fold in half again and press

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING RECTANGLES
One 2.5" by WOF strip will give you approximately 10 folded rectangles.
1. Cut a strip of fabric 2.5" by WOF
2. Fold lengthwise edges towards center of strip and iron. You can also use a 1.25" bias tape maker if that is easier for you.
3. Sub cut strip into 4" rectangles
4. Fold in half (top to bottom) and press. Your finished rectangles should measure 1.25" wide by 2" long.

YARDAGE -- these masuresments are approximate

Pine Burr: There are 90 squares per 1 square foot of quilt. One yard of fabric yields 80-90 squares.

Bazaar: There are 100 rectangles per 1 square foot of quilt. One yard of fabric yields 130-140 rectangles.
