What you'll learn in this quilting class:
This class is an exploration of the circle, a classic quilt form.
We’ll be playing with circles in three forms:
This class is suitable for confident quilters from advanced beginner to experienced. Some experience with paper piecing will be helpful, but is not essential. All the techniques used will be reviewed and one-on-one assistance will be available.
Required supplies to bring with you (all available for purchase at the school except the paper & pencil):
We’ll be playing with circles in three forms:
- String Fan Circle – This is a paper pieced circle from strips of fabric. Working with this version allows the maker to experiment with color and pattern. The close juxtaposition of the fabrics creates a high intensity blend of color and pattern.
- Checkerboard Circle – This is a paper pieced circle pieced from constructed strip sets. This classic circle creates a very graphic image commonly seen in some classic quilts.
- Swirly Circle or Fan Blades – This circle involves curved piecing and is easier than it looks! You can create a quilt with one or all of these circle forms. Get ready to create your own classic!
This class is suitable for confident quilters from advanced beginner to experienced. Some experience with paper piecing will be helpful, but is not essential. All the techniques used will be reviewed and one-on-one assistance will be available.
Required supplies to bring with you (all available for purchase at the school except the paper & pencil):
- rotary cutter
- 24″ ruler
- pins
- paper & pencil for notes
- Fabric: This is a workshop/design class, so there are no specific yardage recommendations. However, here are some guidelines: String Circles: The samples I’ve been working on include a wide variety of fabrics. Two strips of fabric 1 ¾ inches wide times the width of fabric is all that is needed to construct a quarter circle. Two fat quarters will make 6 quarter circles if the strips are cut 1 ½ inches wide.
Swirly Circles: These should employ fabrics with high contrast. Two width-of-fabric quarter yards should make multiple circles.
Checkerboard Circles: 1/3 to ½ yard of 2 contrasting fabrics should be sufficient to make two circles. Bring lots of fabric so you can achieve the variety you want. And, you can always buy more!
