This course explores the fundamental elements of drawing and oil painting from direct observation.
Students will set up and work from a series of still lives to understand the relationships between line, form, proportion, perspective, composition, and light value through monochromatic graphite studies. In the second half of the course, students will apply these foundational skills to their still life paintings and explore the additional concepts of temperature and chroma. Emphasis in this course is on analytical seeing/interpreting of form.
Before Class - Welcome & How to Prepare for Class
Q&A
Q: Can I make up a class if I miss one?
A: No, there are no makeup classes. Because art is taught with demonstrations and demonstrations are time consuming, if one person misses the class each week, the instructor would spend the first part of each class repeating the demonstration from last week before moving on to the next lesson, which isn't fair to the students who attended. That said, most of our classes are taught atelier style. If there is a demonstration during the particular session, after the demonstration, the instructor goes to each student to work with them on a one-on-one basis. During this time, the instructor can work with you if you missed the previous week to talk and explain what to do.
Q: Are materials provided and included in the cost of the class?
A: Yes.
Students in the Introduction to Drawing and Painting class praised the instructors for their teaching abilities and their willingness to provide individual attention to students. Some students mentioned that they learned a lot and were thrilled with their progress by the end of the class. They appreciated the focus on fundamental skills and techniques. Overall, the class was seen as beneficial for learning the basics of drawing and painting, but some students wished for a more engaging and concept-focused approach. 1. "The class progresses quickly and you learn a lot each week so it's important to try not to miss any." 2. "I learned more than I ever had..." 3. "Adam Cross, the instructor, was phenomenal. He was an absolute expert... always giving you tips on how to improve and sharing ideas for things you can do to make your drawing or painting better."
